The North East Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (NECAMHS)

Free mental health service provided for young people aged 0-18 in the eastern hume region (i.e. Cities of Wangaratta and Wodonga, Shires of Indigo, Benalla, Mansfield Alpine and Towong and the township of Yarrawonga.)

Any one can make a referral to NECAMHS. When you ring, you will speak to the Intake worker who will discuss what the current problem is and why you think NECAMHS is the best place to find help. Young people can refer themselves to NECAMHS as well and whoever makes a referral to NECAMHS can expect to talk about how parents or key adult supports could be involved. When there is an issue of safety of the young person, a parent or key adult will always be involved.

NECAMHS provides an assessment to get a good understanding of what is going on and to then plan with you what would be most helpful to get the young person’s mental health back on track. NECAMHS can also provide consultation to other people or agencies so that they too can assist in the best way possible to achieve this.

NECAMHS generally is a point of referral when problems and symptoms have become more complex and persistent.

NECAHMS also co-ordinates assessment for complex presentations that suggest a young person may have autism through the autism assessment team. It is recommended that this possibility is discussed with a paediatrician first though.

Our mental health promotion officer supports the learning about mental health within organisations and child and youth community through education and mental health promotion programmes e.g. Youth Mental Health First Aid.
